PEACH FOUNDATION NEWSLETTER

December, 2009, issue no. 24

Dear PEACH members,

Season’s greetings! We come again to the end of yet another peaceful year.

There are still volunteer openings available for the 2010 Summer Camps, so please hurry to apply. Remember, the deadline is January 31, 2010.

First session       7/6 - 7/17/2010         in YuanYang, Yunnan

Second session  7/20 - 7/29/2010        in Lijiang, Yunnan

On November 5, 2009, the school building donated by volunteer Mr. Eric Auyang was completed at GuoLe Elementary School in Lijiang, Yunnan. Mr. Auyang and Mrs. Anli Chao, President of PEACH Taiwan chapter, attended the opening ceremony. From now on, the children from the impoverished hillside districts can say goodbye to the days of windowless, dingy enclosures, and enjoy studying instead in spacious, well-lit classrooms. We want to thank Mr. Auyang for his generosity.

On November 7, Anli Chao led 6 staff members to inspect 115 potential PEACH new students in YuLong County and to visit the underprivileged elementary schools to prepare for next year's primary school summer camps. YuLong County has not made much progress since their last visit, and is still marked by severe poverty and deprivation. To send their children to school, some parents were forced to sell their cows, which they desperately needed for farming. When PEACH staffers asked how the children’s parents plan to manage their farms and to support their children in the future, they said the only option they have left is to borrow from their neighbors... For these unfortunate parents and children, troubled with such feelings of immense burden, it is still a long journey for these children to go and to finish school.

In 2010, PEACH will begin working in a new site, Ninglang County in Yunnan Province, which is among the poorest districts in China.

In 2009, PEACH has accomplished the following notable achievements:

1.  An addition of 417 new students.

2. PEACH Foundation joined a Taiwan charity organization, HuaXia Association, to help eleven families of Taipei HuLu Elementary School that have disadvantaged children.

3. From April 6 to April 12, a PEACH inspection group consists of seven volunteers visited 28 PEACH students in seven villages in YuLong County.

4. From April 13 to April 24, Vice-President Anli Chao and I led five staff members to YuanYang and LuChun counties for home inspection. We visited 200 homes.

5. From July 6 to July 30, PEACH successfully held two sessions of English Summer Camps in YanYuan County in Sichuan Province and YuLong County in Yunnan Province. During these camps, more than sixty volunteers served as instructors at their own expense. More than 600 PEACH children attended the camps, and they were all provided with medical care, mosquito nets, Chinese and English dictionaries. One of our volunteer, Mr. Pong donated 250 sets of toiletries to the YanYuan students during summer camp. The pilot elementary school summer camp was also concluded on July 31 at GaoHan elementary school in YuLong County.

6.  Our volunteer, Ms. Belle Chou donated 400 blankets to the elderly in the GaoHan regions in YuLong County.

7. Trade companies and shoe factories in DongGuan, Guangzhou Province, donated thousands of articles of clothing and shoes to our PEACH children.

8. Our PEACH children have created about ninety pieces of art to participate in the Double Ninth Festival charity auction sponsored by Jiangsu SuHui latex manufacturer.

9. PEACH purchased supplement school materials, such as reference books, recorders, English tapes, and extra-curricular reading materials, as well as basketballs and soccer balls, for the PEACH students in YuanYang High School in HongHe County & two high schools in YuLong County of Yunnan Province.

10. Extra-curricular reading materials were delivered to 268 elementary school libraries.

11. We have provided sets of thermal pajamas, mittens, scarves, and socks to all our new students to help keep out the bitter cold.

12. We published the eighth edition of our magazine, named PEACHER.

13. Since its establishment, PEACH Foundation has assisted 2542 children. Among them, 510 are attending universities, and 151 have graduated from colleges. Our alumni are in a wide variety of fields: He JianQiang works in a Shenzhen multimedia electronics company, Shi DouZe works in an automobile company also in Shenzhen. Others, such as Su ChaoGui, He ChaoMing, Hong YanHua, Luo QiongYing, and Li GuiFu work in our Kunming Branch office. Sun BaoXiang teaches in Yuanyang High School in Yunnan, Zhang MeiLan is a doctor in Yuanyang Minority Hospital, and He ZhiTian is the principal of YuLong County's Renyi Elementary School. All of these bright young people’s accomplishments are attributable to your unyielding support. (For more information about other graduates’ current positions, we encourage you to visit our website.)

14. In 2010, we plan to add 350 new students to our PEACH family. We hope everyone will act quickly to adopt the incoming students.

At PEACH, we believe every child has the right to be loved and to be educated. We hope that you will continue financing these children’s dreams, as you have done so in the past. Also, please recommend your friends to join our cause to help deprived children through school and to change their fates from destitution.

As the year draws to a close and the holiday season fast approaching, we should stop to think about how lucky we are to have the ability and means to help those most in need.  On behalf of all our volunteers and PEACH students, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a joyous holiday season and a blessed new year.

Best wishes of health, fortune, and joy,

Ruth Jeng

President

Dear Uncle, with your support, I was recently accepted into university, and I wanted to thank you! Looking back, I grew up in the middle of extreme poverty, eating mostly a mixture of corn, potatoes, and rice, and wearing used clothing passed down from relatives, while watching other children at school indulging sweets. When I started school, I watched others pay their tuition without any difficulty, while my parents had to struggle by borrowing. I remember when I was in the 9th grade, I asked my brother, “ Why is life so unfair? Why are some families so wealthy, while others are so poor?” I hated that I was born into this poor family. My brother replied, “Life is fair. Even though our family is poor, we treat each other nicely, while many wealthy families have their own problems. Our family is poor, but we are still very fortunate that we have each other.”

Now, I am able to go to college because of your help. I don’t fully understand what makes you decide to help children like me, but I am very thankful for your generosity. With your love, I have the strength to fight on. I will do my best in college, study well, and become a valuable member of society, to improve my family standing and to make you proud.

How time flies!  I’ve now graduated from high school. We all encounter difficulties in life, but life can be even harder for poor students like me. However, poverty can’t stop my desire to learn. With your help, my determination is even stronger. I will not be deterred by challenges ahead.  I remember how my heart was broken and my will was nearly shattered when I saw my aging parents, struggling to make ends meet. I almost decided to drop out of school then, but it was your love that saved me.

I want to tell you how much I appreciate your help so I could finish high school and accomplish an important milestone in my life. It is you who let in the sunlight in the darkness of poverty. It is you who helped me grow out of my self-pitying. With your help, I am no longer lost. Your help is like the beautiful rainbow after the storm.  Your help is like the spring breeze that brightens the bare branches of winter and defrosts the frozen river, returning life to the earth.

When I see a starry night, I think of you. If each star symbolizes love to someone, the brightest star must be from you, so bright and so beautiful.

It is with your help I am in college now. I know there is still a long road ahead, but I know I am closer to my dream. For that, I want to thank you.

A most sincere “thank you” from the deepest part of my heart cannot adequately describe how my heart feels for your selfless love and kindness. It scares me whenever I think of what my life would be like if I didn’t have your support. I might have ended up working as a day laborer, or forced to marry out to someone I’ve never met. With your support, I am the first in our village to leave the mountain region and attended college.  I can’t begin to tell you how fortunate I feel.  My parents are also grateful because they often remind me, “Don’t ever forget the lady who helped you. She is like a second parent to you, and you must study well …”

Dear Auntie, you are kind and loving like my mother. You bring happiness to my life. A child needs a mother like sky needs clouds. I saw the worry in your eyes when you first saw poor children like me, and I felt the love all around you. My life was very bitter before I met you. You gave me the desire to live. You helped me realize that there is hope, and you helped me complete high school and enter college. There is a tree growing in my heart, and it is your love nourishing its growth.

In this world filled with hardships, you gave me strength and helped change my life. You gave me happiness and warmth. When you entered my life, I witnessed the power of love. Dear Auntie, you are the tree that provides shelter to me, and you are the racing rivers generating energy for me. Most of all, you are the spring breeze that brings hope to the desolate ground of winter. Thank you for your love like a mother, and thank you for giving me the wings to fly.

We have never met, but you supported me all these years, from middle school through my high school career. Your caring love gives me the strength and confidence to achieve academic success, and the freedom from worrying about the financial difficulties of my family. Thanks to you, I recently was admitted to my dream college.

I challenge myself in all aspects of my life, little by little. During the last few years, I learned to be independent, to be strong, and to face everyday with a positive and healthy attitude. You have helped me face so many difficulties in the past years. I learned valuable lessons with each hurtle, and I’ve grown so much over time.

Not only have you helped me financially, but you also gave me advice that helped me come out of the valleys of my life. You guided me toward a happy and healthy life. With your kindness and your love, you encourage me to never give up. You made me strong and confident, and you helped me to pursue the big goals I have for myself.

I can’t change the fact that I was born into poverty, but with your support, I will keep working hard to change my life in the future.

Your financial assistance allowed me to leave hardships of day-labor work and to return to school, which I love.  You gave me the light of hope and gave me the wings to dream. I finally was able to leave the poor mountainous region I was born into, and to move towards a brighter future.  You gave me light, strength, and courage. I no longer cry in the darkness of the night, shedding tears only when I think no one is looking.  I no longer see myself as an ugly ducking. I know I will blossom into a pretty swan one day.

Because of your loving care and your dearest wishes for me from far away, I no longer feel hopeless.

I would have never been able to attend classes in college, taught by the finest professors, if not for your support. You provided me with financial support, as well as enormous strength to keep me inspired, to be the best I can be. Thank you!

I was born in a remote, poor mountain village. My family has more than ten people, and every year, we run out of food around March or April.  I had to drop out of middle school and go to work as a day laborer because our family had no money. I quickly learned that without education, I don’t have many opportunities for advancement. I tried and borrowed enough money to go back to school, but it wasn’t until I had your support that I was able to devote myself fully to my studies.

I was very lost when I first entered high school, but with your support, my grades improved gradually. Now that I am a college student, I am so grateful with what I have. You are the sunshine that came through the thick clouds for me, and you are the umbrella that protects me from the rain. I am forever grateful that I have you.

I will work harder than others and I will make you proud.

Dear Auntie, thank you for your support, so a child born from a poor family could go to college. I can’t image what my life would be like if I didn’t have your help. You made me realize that poverty is not the worst enemy. The truly worst enemy I have faced is the despair of not knowing how to defeat and overcome poverty.  With your support, I know I can defeat my worst enemy.

I sought your advice when I entered high school, and your letter was kind and detailed in answering my questions. You helped me financially all these years, from middle school through high school, but you also helped me spiritually as well. Without all your help, I couldn’t have had the opportunity to go to college or known how to handle all the difficulties I have encountered on the way.

I feel very fortunate that I was able to leave the poor mountainous region. You’re like a candle, lighting up my life and guiding me toward new directions. I have learned to be strong and to find light even in the darkest hours.
