The Peach Summer Program was a deep experience for me. I saw a lot (rural villages in China), experienced a lot (met local students and learned about their lives, hopes, and dreams), and I gained a lot (new friends and relationships). My students inspired me; many had struggled, and were still struggling with all sorts of challenges associated with their poverty, yet still had a positive outlook on life.
I think perhaps the best way to describe the Summer Program is that it is a win-win-win. Its a win for teachers like me because we get a wonderful experience of helping others, making new friends, and seeing a new part of the world. It¡¯s a win for the students as they get encouragement, a sympathetic ear, and window to the larger world. And finally it¡¯s a win for the world as the Peach Foundation provides a way for bright young people to escape the cycle of poverty and contribute to society in a potentially big way.
I hope to participate again next year, and so does my teenage son .
